About us

ESG approach

Over the past 20 years, we have taken a holistic approach towards ESG, continuously aligning it with our long-term business strategy and embedding it in every part of our business. Our ESG approach focuses on three core pillars: Caring for Our People, Conserving the Environment, and Creating Stronger Communities.

“Since 2002, our sustainability program has helped guide Gildan’s business operations in all areas related to the integration of environment, social, and governance (ESG) practices into our long-term business strategy. While this has long been a core part of our journey, we recognize that when we talk about sustainability, there isn’t a finish line but rather a continuous path forward with more work to be done.” - Peter Iliopoulos SVP, Taxation, Sustainability, and Governmental Affairs

Materiality assessment

In 2020, we initiated our third comprehensive materiality process with a third-party sustainability consulting agency to identify areas of key concern for our stakeholders which could have the most significant potential to impact our own business. Based on the level of importance to both stakeholders and the business, 12 of these topics were deemed to by high priority and have been grouped into five broad categories:

  • Climate change and water
  • Human capital management
  • Long-term value creation
  • Circularity
  • ESG transparency and disclosure

Our materiality approach followed established best practices, SASB's value creation approach, and GRI's broader stakeholder impact principles. These results will inform our ESG objectives and strategy moving forward and be included holistically as part of our wider business strategy.

Sustainable development goals

The U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. They are made up of 17 interconnected goals which address the three key dimensions of sustainable development: social, economic, and environmental.

In 2017, we selected four sustainable development goals that best aligned with our own business strategy to help create a better world for all.

We believe that investing in education helps build job and life skills that can have transformational impacts on communities, promoting socioeconomic stability and helping communities escape poverty. Through financial and in-kind donations, as well as through volunteering by our employees, we support inclusive quality education programs in our communities that focus on hygiene, nutrition, environmental protection, and violence prevention. We also focus on the ongoing development of our employees through our training programs and resources.

We offer quality jobs through progressive compensation and benefit programs, provide safe and healthy work environments, invest in training and development initiatives, and foster a culture where employees feel empowered to achieve their goals. This commitment extends to our third-party finished goods suppliers to ensure they also respect the fundamental rights of their employees, as detailed in our Code of Conduct.

Why it matters to us

We are adopting sustainable business practices and incorporating environmental responsibility throughout our operations and our product life cycles. We do this by collaborating with our manufacturing partners and material suppliers in the selection of materials, processes, and chemicals to eliminate all substances and waste products known or suspected of being harmful to human health or environmental systems. We are also developing new processes and approaches to reduce, re-use, recycle, recover, and dispose of materials to support our zero-waste goals.
